Event Description Clare E. Milner, PhD, FACSM, in the department of physical therapy and rehabilitation sciences, College of Nursing and Health Professions, Drexel University, will discuss how running is a perennially popular form of physical activity that provides many health benefits, and yet, the gains in cardiovascular and bone health are offset by an extremely high rate of injury. With millions of runners in the US and worldwide, this is a significant public health problem. While many internal and external factors may contribute to an injury occurrence, gait biomechanics are a risk factor that can be modifiable. A period of abstinence from running will allow an injury to heal, but the high rate of recurrence of the same injury points to the need to address such underlying risk factors. This presentation will discuss the findings of a series of studies investigating links between gait biomechanics and overuse injury in runners, and will highlight current work that builds on this evidence base to establish effective rehabilitation protocols to reduce the risk of injury in runners.
