Community as a Mode of Jewish Politics
Start Date: 2/27/2017Start Time: 10:00 AM
End Date: 2/27/2017End Time: 11:30 AM

Event Description
The Judaic Studies Program and the Department of History of Drexel University present “Community as a Mode of Jewish Politics,” a lecture by Menachem Lorberbaum, PhD, professor of Jewish philosophy, Tel Aviv University, and Katz Distinguished Fellow, Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies, University of Pennsylvania.

The talk will examine the historical formation and structure of the ‘kehillah’ or ‘kahal,’ the medieval form of Jewish community, and its transmutation in early modernity. This discussion arises from communitarian thought that highlights the significance of the community and the autonomous character of community structures for an understanding of civil society and the politics of diasporic communities. This approach contrasts with concepts of more standard political theory that focus on sovereignty and the state.

Free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Support for this event comes from the Louis and Bessie Stein Foundation, The Milton and Miriam Handler Foundation, and the Friends of Judaic Studies. Info: judaicstudies@drexel.edu, 215.895.6388.
