Event Description In this seminar, whose full title is "Live Cell and Tissue Movies, Information Theory and Gaming Hardware: New Approaches to Understanding Human Disease and Development," Dr. Andrew R. Cohen, associate professor in ECE, will discuss how time-lapse microscopes are routinely able to image living proliferating cells together with vessels and organelles. The resulting movies capture dynamic behaviors in live tissue and preserve the cellular microenvironment and spatiotemporal associations. Quantitative analysis of this image sequence data will play a fundamental role in understanding the processes of human disease and development as well as in cancer therapeutics and regenerative medicine. The quantity and complexity of the image sequence data makes purely manual or purely automatic approaches to analysis impossible. This talk will describe a new approach to computational analysis of biological image sequence data. Algorithmic information theory and computer gaming hardware are used to combine the capabilities of the human visual system with image processing, multitarget tracking and machine learning algorithms to quantify dynamic behaviors of proliferating cells, organelles and vessels from video microscopy data. |
