Drexel Engineering Faculty Development Series

Hello! Is anybody out there? Engaging Learners through Interactive Lectures

Johanna Inman, Director, Teaching and Learning Center

Ever wonder what students are really learning during your lectures? Don’t wait until the big exam to find out! Interactive lecturing can heighten student engagement and improve learning by creating opportunities for students to engage with course material through a variety of interactive techniques. These techniques allow you and your students to know exactly what they are learning—or where they are stuck—in real time. In this workshop, we will examine the pros and cons to lecturing, explore the research on student learning, and consider ways to implement this research to improve our lectures.

Johanna Inman began working in the field of educational development in 2008 at Temple University, later becoming an Assistant Director and then Director of Instructional Technology at the Center for the Advancement of Teaching. In these roles, Inman created and facilitated a wide range of professional development programs, mentored faculty from disciplines and ranks across Temple’s 17 schools and colleges, and managed a six-credit Teaching in Higher Education Certificate. Inman has presented extensively at both regional and national conferences on teaching in higher education and is an active member of the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network.

In addition to her work in educational development, Inman has over 18 years of university teaching experience. She has taught a variety of courses including survey, studio, and capstone courses in the visual arts, as well as writing-intensive courses, first-year seminars and general education courses. For the last six years, she has taught an online graduate seminar about technology and teaching in higher education in the College of Education at Temple University.

In 2019, Inman became Inaugural Director for a newly envisioned Teaching and Learning Center at Drexel University.
