Alternative Spring Break 2014 Sign-ups (GRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY)
Start Date: 1/27/2014 All Day
End Date: 2/10/2014

Event Description
Apply now to be a part of the exciting Alternative Spring Break 2014 program. GRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY.

The Office and Campus Activities and Graduate Student Association are excited to host its first Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program for graduate students! The ASB program places teams of Drexel students in communities to engage in community service and experiential learning during spring break. The objectives of the ASB program are to involve students in weeklong community-based service projects and to provide opportunities for engagement in activities that benefit the environment, the community, and those in need. The Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program will be held Mar. 22-30, 2014 with one  local trip taking place in Philadelphia. Students interested in applying to the program should complete the application found on the Office of Campus Activities DragonLink page, under “forms”.

The application must be completed by Monday, Feb. 10, 2014.

ASB trips require a financial commitment from participants. If selected to a trip, a $50 non-refundable deposit will be due mid to late February 2014. The remainder of the participant fee will be due prior to departure, on a trip-by-trip basis. Trip participants are expected to conduct fundraising to off-set costs if necessary.

Trip notifications will be made mid-February 2014.

This year’s trip includes: PhillyRising, Philadelphia. Your spring break could be spent revitalizing the various districts of Philadelphia with PhillyRising and helping the people in these communities realize their vision for their community. PhillyRising works in neighborhoods that have experienced quality of life concerns like vacancy and lack of resources and many times, crime. Students would work over spring break to rejuvenate these communities and make them more sustainable by maintaining parks and community centers, and ultimately empowering the residents of these communities to become leaders and take ownership of the projects. In the past, PhillyRising has worked with AmeriCorps volunteers, community members, and adjudicated youth. They have worked to provide bicycles and sports equipment at Strawberry Mansion, took neighborhood children on a tour of museums and landmarks in Washington D.C., and turned vacant lots into community green space in Southwest Philly. Together, in partnership with PhillyRising, we can transform the city of Philadelphia.
