BHM - Drexel Celebrates Black History Month
Start Date: 2/1/2015 All Day
End Date: 2/28/2015
Event Description

Black History Month is a time when we as a Drexel community commemorate the history and achievements of the black community. We learn about unspoken histories and add a different perspective to the retelling of the past. The month incorporates cultural celebrations and speakers to engage the Drexel community in a conversation on the existing realities of the black community in the U.S. and internationally.

Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson through the organization he founded, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), conceived and announced Negro History Week in 1925. The event was first celebrated during a week in February 1926 that encompassed the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. His hope was to raise awareness of African Americans' contributions to civilization. The celebration was expanded to a full month in 1976, the nation's bicentennial. President Gerald Ford urged Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history."
