Philly Materials Science and Engineering Day 2018

End Date: 2/3/2018End Time: 3:00 PM

Event Description
The annual hands-on science and engineering event, Philly Materials Science and Engineering Day (Philly Materials Day), will be hosted at Drexel University on Saturday, February 3, 2018. Free and open to the public, the event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Bossone Research Enterprise Center at 3126 Market Street.

What do running across liquid, making ice cream in seconds, and bendable glass have to do with your day-to-day life? You can find out all these things and more about how materials science and engineering impacts the world at the annual Philly Materials Day.

Philly Materials Day raises public awareness of the importance of materials science and engineering. Nearly everything in the world around us is made of something—stuff. Materials science and engineering is the study of that stuff and how we use it to create useful things for everyday life. The event allows people of all ages to explore some of the materials that the world is made of and to learn about how materials affect us every day.

Now entering its eighth year, the 2018 Philly Materials Day will include drop-in hands-on demonstrations for all and small group workshops geared to kids ages 10 to 17. Workshop participants will work in teams to explore how the materials have an impact on their lives. The day also features a special performance at 11 a.m. mixing hip-hop and materials science with scientist performer Grand Hank.

Drexel University’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering will host the event, along with the University of Pennsylvania, the Franklin Institute, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and other organizations.
