Event Description
In the United States, over 50% of all public elementary and secondary students are students of color. In comparison, teachers of color comprise less than 20% of all public school teachers. Specifically, in the state of Pennsylvania, 33% of public school students are students of color, compared to just 5.6% of its teachers. Pennsylvania’s gap between students of color and teachers of color remains among the most disparate in the country.
Join us for a conversation with Dr. Donald Easton-Brooks, Dean of the College of Education at the University of Nevada – Reno, and author of the award-winning book Ethnic Matching: Academic Success of Students of Color. He will discuss the challenges of recruiting and retaining teachers of color, as well as the valuable work being done to promote diversifying the field of education as a way to provide equitable education for all students. Dr. Easton-Brooks’ keynote will be followed by a panel discussion among scholars, policymakers, and advocates about the recruitment, retention, and experiences of teachers of color. Ethnic Matching will be available for purchase and signing after the event.
