17th Kaczmarczik Lecture "The Accelerating Universe”

Event Description
The Department of Physics, CoAS, will host the 17th annual Kaczmarczik Lecture from 3 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, 2012 in the Main Building Auditorium (32nd and Chestnut Streets) with guest speaker Dr. Brian P. Schmidt, who will present “The Accelerating Universe”. Dr. Schmidt and his team of 20 astronomers, spread over 5 continents, use distant exploding stars to trace the expansion of the Universe back in time. They made the astonishing discovery that the Universe is not simply expanding, but is speeding up in its expansion. This acceleration points to the presence of "dark energy" that comprises 70% of the density of the Universe. For this discovery, Drs. Schmidt, Adam Riess, and Saul Perlmutter were awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. In his lecture, Dr. Schmidt will share the story of how these observations were made and explain what they mean for the past, present, and future of the Universe.
