Dr. John Dahlberg, Deputy Director, Office of Research Integrity, NIH, presents "Research Integrity and Responsible Conduct of Research: Why should you Care?" Dispersed among the majority of honest researchers, irrespective of their field of research or scholarly activities are a number of investigators who, for various reasons, have decided to take matters into their own hands by inventing or "revising" data, in both their publications and their grants. Such behavior threatens the confidence in the research process of the community and public at large, but how does it get discovered? And how common is it anyway? Fascinating and ingenious forensic tools have been developed by the Division of Investigative Oversight to ferret out such cases of misconduct. These will be discussed, as well as their use in prominent misconduct cases. Finally, there will be a brief discussion of the resources that ORI provides to help institutions discover their own misconduct cases, in addition to fostering a climate that insures such events are minimized.
