(Cancelled)Climate Prediction Across Timescales: From Seasons to Decades
Start Date: 3/13/2013Start Time: 11:00 AM
End Date: 3/13/2013End Time: 1:00 PM
Event Description
Dr. Lisa Goddard Director, The International Research Institute for Climate and Society The Earth Institute, Columbia University Climate is varying on all timescales, and much of what we actually experience as “climate change” is really some combination of man-made climate change trends together with slowly evolving natural variability. Providing information about climate change over the next decade or two, and the climate-related impacts that may occur along the way, is thus about prediction of not just man-made climate change, but also about that intervening natural variability. Currently our understanding of the climate processes acting on different time scales, as well as our ability to simulate and predict these with dynamical models, varies greatly across timescales. This will be illustrated, and reasons for it presented. Dr. Goddard will conclude with a discussion of some current research that seeks to make the most of imperfect models and even how one might provide useful climate information in the absence of skillful predictions.
