Physics Colloquium: Electronic Detection and Diagnosis of Health and Illness of Premature Infants
Start Date: 5/5/2016Start Time: 3:30 PM
End Date: 5/5/2016End Time: 4:30 PM
Event Description
John B. Delos, PhD, William & Mary

We are part of an enthusiastic community of scientists who are extracting new information from electronic signals that are collected in Intensive Care Units. New methods of analysis of the heart rate can give early warning of bacterial infection. New methods of analysis of respiration may give warning of intestinal or other pathologies. We make use of a huge data set consisting of about 50 baby-years of all electronic signals collected from infants in neonatal intensive care units. Recently we have gained new knowledge about very long (>60 second) apneas in infants and about periodic breathing (spells of alternating breathing and apnea with cycle time ~15 seconds).
