Vital Signs CLE: Using State Law to Promote Abortion Access
Start Date: 3/4/2024Start Time: 12:30 PM
End Date: 3/4/2024End Time: 1:30 PM
Event Description
In January 2024, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court issued a favorable decision in Allegheny Reproductive Health Center v. PA Department of Human Services, a case brought by Pennsylvania abortion providers challenging the Commonwealth’s ban on Medicaid reimbursement for abortions and asking the Court to recognize a constitutional right to abortion on equality grounds. This important development comes as jurisdictions across the U.S. take action to enhance state law protections for abortion in the absence of a federal constitutional right to abortion after the U.S. Supreme Court decided Dobbs.

Join Vital Signs on Monday, March 4, to learn about groundbreaking litigation and legislative efforts to protect abortion at the state level, starting with a briefing from the lawyers litigating Allegheny Reproductive Health Center about the impact of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s decision and what we can expect as the litigation progresses in the Commonwealth Court. The program will also include discussion of the new “shield” laws passed by a growing number of states to protect health care providers and other state-level litigation to promote abortion access.
