Jordan R. Kuiper, PhD, MS, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, will present
"Exposed and vulnerable: endocrine
disrupting chemicals and children’s health."
More than 85,000 chemicals are registered for commercial production and use
in the United States. Humans are continuously exposed to a variety of these
chemicals, including from plastics, processed foods and beverages, clothing,
personal care products, and even medical devices and equipment. Some of these
chemicals, “endocrine disrupting chemicals,” mimic hormones in the body and can
have profound implications for human health. Children, including those with
critical illnesses or conditions at birth, are particularly vulnerable to these
chemical exposures.
Kuiper’s research focuses on characterizing children’s
exposures to legacy and emerging chemicals of concern, in general and
specialized populations, and elucidating their impacts on growth and development.
The ultimate goal of this work is to provide evidence for policy-oriented
solutions so that all children can live their healthiest lives.
Kuiper is an environmental epidemiologist whose research
primarily focuses on children’s environmental health. Specifically, his work
aims to characterize environmental exposures to legacy and emerging chemicals
of concern across the early life course, and further elucidate their
implications on various child health outcomes. Most recently, his research has
focused on children in the neonatal intensive care unit and identifying drivers
of adverse outcomes among this heterogenous and highly vulnerable population.
