Event Description

Guest speakers: Gabrielle Claiborne-she/her/hers and Linda Herzer-she/her/hers from Transformation Journeys Worldwide

Through presentation and Q&A, participants will:

1. Discover unconscious cultural assumptions about gender, and how they impact personal and societal understandings of trans people. (“Trans” is an umbrella term indicating all persons of diverse gender identities.)

2. Learn trans-related terms and identities. This includes developing an understanding of the 4 aspects of gender that all humans beings have: gender identity, gender expression, biological sex and sexual orientation, and current legal battles related to these 4 aspects of gender.

3. Meet trans people of all ages and ethnicities, and their families, through brief video clips and Gabrielle's personal story.

4. Understand the 3 aspects of transitioning (social, legal and physical) and their implications for the classroom and beyond.

5. Learn from the perspectives of an ally and a trans person how to interact respectfully with trans people.
