Advancing the Village: Addressing Disparities and Connecting the Dots in Maternal Mental Health
Start Date: 3/6/2020Start Time: 8:30 AM
End Date: 3/6/2020End Time: 4:00 PM
Event Description
This Conference will examine how pregnant women and new mothers experience depression, how systemic racism effects perinatal mental health, and the experience of receiving behavioral health care as a pregnant woman or new mother of color.

The goal is to concentrate on the inherent strengths of individuals, families, groups and organizations in order to promote asset-based advocacy and healing for patients in healthcare settings. By connecting the many “dots” that impact maternal mental health experiences, we hope to aid in recovery and wellbeing in the community.

The conference features women of color leaders, advocates, activists, thought leaders, birth workers, policymakers, and several women-of-color-led organizations here in Philadelphia who are leading and driving solutions to address maternal mortality and maternal mental health.

This event is held in partnership with Philadelphia Department of Public Health’s Healthy Start Program, the Dornsife School of Public Health (DSPH), Drexel College of Medicine Behavioral Healthcare Program, and the Community Action Network Integrated Care workgroup. Input for this conference was also provided by the Philadelphia Community Action Network’s Integrated Care work group.

Irene Headen, PhD, MS, Assistant Professor, Community Health and Prevention at DSPH, is featured as the keynote speaker, presenting on “Structural Racism & Perinatal Health: Unpacking Systems of Inequity Towards Action.”

Pennsylvania State Representative Morgan D. Cephas (D-192) and La’Tasha D. Mayes, the founder and Executive Director of New Voices for Reproductive Justice, will be speaking on “Meaningful Solutions to Maternal Mortality: Addressing Mortality in the Local and National Legislature.”

This event will be livestreamed.
