Event Description

Speaker: Dr. Toyoko Orimoto, Northeastern University

Abstract: The hunt for the Higgs boson has been one of the primary aims of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Experiment, a general purpose particle detector experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Our search has culminated in the recent discovery of a new ~126 GeV/c2 mass particle, a viable Higgs candidate and one of the most important discoveries in particle physics in the past several decades. I present an overview of the Standard Model of particle physics, as well as the motivation for the existence of the Higgs boson. I will describe the CMS detector, focusing on its strengths with respect to the search for the Higgs. Lastly, I will describe the most recent CMS results in the study of the Higgs.
