Event Description Simply uttering the name “Edgar Allan Poe” conjures up dark and haunting tales of terror, murder and insanity. Was Poe the mad and tormented artist that society made him out to be? Is it possible that some form of madness accompanies literary genius? And is there a connection between creativity and psychopathology?
“The Myth and Madness of Edgar Allan Poe” will examine both how and why art and madness are linked. Students will explore Poe’s contributions to the establishment of new genres, as well as the “myth” of his literary genius. The talk will also look at how Poe’s work has been adapted over time, including the production of “Haunted Poe,” a theatrical twist on the concept of the haunted house.
