Event Description

Title: "Declining sediments and rising seas: An unfortunate convergence for tidal marshes"

Speaker: Nathaniel Weston (Villanova University) Department of Geography and the Environment, Environmental Science (hosted by Dr. David Velinsky)

Description: Tidal marshes are very productive ecosystems that provide critical ecosystem services, but they are under increasing threat from sea-level rise. The availability of sediments will be a key factor determining whether tidal marshes accrete vertically and keep pace with sea-level rise or are permanently submerged. However, declines in suspended sediment have been documented in many rivers along the East and Gulf Coasts, and these declines tend to be most rapid where rates of relative sea-level rise are highest. Declining in sediment availability together with accelerating sea-level rise will increase the vulnerability of tidal marshes.

 Refreshments will be served.

The BEES Graduate Research Seminar is a weekly series of scientific presentations by faculty, graduate students and outside speakers. The seminars are opportunities for learning about and discussing ongoing research in the department and current issues in biodiversity, earth and environmental science.
