Suicidal Patient Calls

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US. In this session, we will discuss the topic of suicidal patient calls with an emphasis on the recommended guidelines of responding to a patient who is suicidal. We will explore risk factors and warning signs of possible suicidal patients. Management guidelines for appropriate ways to respond to a suicidal patient call will be presented through video simulation of case scenarios.

Learning Objectives

  • Define and provide examples of risk and protective factors
  • Distinguish between risk factors and warning signs
  • Follow the Suicidal Patient Management Guidelines for 3 scenarios – (1) suicidal patient with no plan, (2) suicidal patient with a plan who agrees to get help and, (3) suicidal patient who has a plan and does not agree to get help
  • Determine what questions to ask when a suicidal patient calls into a practice
  • Be able to delegate to another co-worker when assistance is needed in handling a suicidal caller
