Event Description
Group Art Psycho Therapy with Adult Cancer Patients: Case studies seen through a psychoanalytic, psychosocial and creative lens.

Using psychoanalytic theories and concepts, such as the transitional space, transference and countertransference with adult cancer patients, the presenter will demonstrate how art making can foster new psychic integration through creative work in spite of life-threatening illness. Through case presentations illustrated by art, Dreifuss-Kattan will show how art making can alter and slow down the progression of disease of one cancer patient, using photography and Facebook. A young cancer patient expresses her symptoms through digital collages, enabling her family and doctors to empathize with her symptoms and finding the right diagnosis. The presenter will discuss how the nonverbal creative expression of aggressive as well loving feelings, and the transferential relationship to the therapist and group members can alter somatic symptoms and relationships to the medical team and family, and enhance psychological wellbeing and hope, in spite of surgeries and acute medical treatments in patients with cancer.
