Alliance for Diversity in Science and Engineering Young Researcher's Conference
Start Date: 4/27/2019 All Day
End Date: 4/27/2019
Event Description
Dear Colleagues,

I am emailing you today because I and the Alliance for Diversity in Science and Engineering (ADSE) are hosting a Young Researcher Conference on Drexel's campus on Saturday, April 27th. ADSE is an organization dedicated to the promotion and inclusion of underrepresented minority students in the STEM fields, and one of the main modes of pursuing this is through our conferences.

This year, we are going to have a keynote lectures from Prof. Osvaldo Gutierrez Santacruz (UMD: https://www.gutierrezlabs.com/) and Prof. Sarah Wengryniuk (Temple: https://wengryniuklab.weebly.com/), Prof. Nicolas Alvarez (Drexel: http://www.chemeng.drexel.edu/alvarezlab/), and Prof. Eric Schelter (University of Pennsylvania: http://scheltergroup.chem.upenn.edu/).

In addition, the students will have the opportunity to:

· Present oral and/or poster presentations.

· Learn about non-traditional STEM careers

· Network with other students and faculty

· Learn how more about the interview process (for graduate school, postdoctoral research positions, and for academic and industry positions)

Previously, we organized YRC events at UCLA (2016), UC Davis (2017), University of Maryland (2017), and Xavier University (2018). We hope to make this event a success for years to come.

At previous YRCs, we have had undergrad, grad students, and postdocs present research, or simply come to network and listen to talks by some amazing scientists. For most students, the YRC is their first conference; a space for students to get a feel for presenting and discussing research in a formal setting without the stress of huge conference costs or being lost in a sea of people. We plan the day's activities so that networking and discussion between all career levels is encouraged, so they will come out of this more confident in themselves and with many new contacts for their careers moving forward.

Should your students like to present their work, they can hold a poster presentation, and will be competing for a prize.

I hope this sounds interesting to your students.

Attached is the flyer for our conference. Registration is free and a light breakfast, followed by lunch will be served to all as part of our mission for inclusion. We would love to see your students come out and see all the awesome research that is being done.
