Event Description
The purpose of this presentation is to outline academic and social
challenges faced by college students on the autism spectrum, discuss strategies
for University professionals in supporting such students, and provide an overview of the Drexel Autism Support Program (DASP).
Dimensions of student development as viewed through the lens of this population
will be examined, to help attendees best recognize and understand the broad
challenges many such students may face in relation to “the hidden curriculum”,
communication, social integration, restricted behaviors, and daily challenges
which in turn may interfere with learning and developmental growth. The goal
will be to introduce University professionals to the DASP resource, acquire
appreciation of neurodiversity on campus, and initiate the conversation on how
best to interact with and support Drexel students on the spectrum throughout
the student life cycle.
The presentation/discussion will be preceded by a short TED
talk by Temple Grandin to help introduce the topic.
