Abstract: Although online interactions are uniquely different from offline interactions, they share a vision of a world in which fundamental societal values, like justice, equity, and privacy, are supported. In this talk, I will describe how theories of justice can be designed into online systems to respond to harassment. Almost half of Internet users have been the target of online harassment and experts believe the problem is getting worse. Currently, social media sites respond to harassment by removing content and banning users; however, offenders can evade punishment by hiding behind anonymous identities and lagging legal systems. I will first present experiments that demonstrate how Internet users enact retributive justice in response to harassment, invoking a mechanism known as “an eye for an eye.” I will then present a system designed to facilitate bystander support for targets of harassment. This system makes harassment reports visible in order to establish norms about inappropriate behavior. I will conclude with a preview of a current project examining the attentional costs of abusive behavior online.
About the Speaker: Sarita Schoenebeck is an Assistant Professor in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. She directs the Living Online Lab and is a co-founder of the Social Media Research Lab. Her research bridges human-computer interaction and social computing with a focus on studying and designing technology to address societal needs. Schoenebeck received her Ph.D in Human-Centered Computing from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She is a recipient of the NSF CAREER award and Best Paper and Honorable Mention awards at CHI. Her research has been covered in The New York Times, Washington Post, NPR, The Atlantic, NBC, ABC, CBS, and elsewhere.
