Strategies for Reducing Development Risk and Accelerating Time to Market for New Medical Devices
Start Date: 4/19/2013Start Time: 4:00 PM
End Date: 4/19/2013End Time: 5:30 PM

Event Description
Eric Sugalski, founder and CEO of Boston Device Development, will discuss how most early stage medical device companies try to enter commercialization mode as quickly as possible and how their aim is well intended – to reduce capital requirements and to gain first mover advantage in the market. They often pursue the initial device architecture that is envisioned and spend a significant amount of time and capital implementing technical details. While some startups may succeed through this approach, the majority later determine that the device architecture that was originally conceived was not the right one. It may face usability challenges, performance limitations and safety issues. Unfortunately, after significant time and capital has been used building the wrong device, investment may dry up or the founding team members may move on. The objective of this seminar is to share a framework for identifying device needs, evaluating tradeoffs in making product decisions, and translating findings into actionable design specifications. The seminar will show how product planning activities can anticipate market response to a new device, balance product features and their associated tradeoffs, align multidisciplinary teams, and reduce time to market. Examples from the presenter’s professional experience will be used to illustrate the framework in action. For more info, please visit: www.biomed.drexel.edu
