Event Description

Student Scholar Chats:
Conversations with Drexel Fellowships Honorees

Come hear about what students across the University are accomplishing; their experiences with fellowships and research; as well as how these opportunities fit into their broader academic experience.

Tuesday, April 19, 4-5pm:
Amanda Pentecost (BS Materials Science & Engineering '13)
National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, 2013-16
DFO Fellowships Ambassador 2015-16
Whitaker International Fellowship, 2016-17

Amanda is a dual PhD candidate in Materials Science & Engineering and MS student in Biomedical Engineering. Amanda’s dissertation research focuses on using theragnostic diamond nanoparticles to increase the effectiveness of a common anti-inflammatory drug, dexamethasone, in preventing fibrous capsule formation and isolation of an implanted biomaterial. Under the guidance of Dr. Yury Gogotsi (MSE, Drexel Nanomaterials Group) and Dr. Kara Spiller (BMES, Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine Lab), Amanda has been designing and characterizing this novel drug delivery system, as well as testing it on a cellular level.

About Student Scholar Chats

Student Scholar Chats are a series of one-hour conversations with Drexel students and recent alumni who have successfully applied for nationally-competitive fellowships. The chats feature 1-2 students who present a brief, 10-15 minute overview of their fellowships experience, touching on the challenges, benefits, and impact of these experiences for their current and future work. This is followed by an informal Q&A discussion.

Student Scholar Chats are not an academic presentation or information session. Presenters may discuss some technical details of their research and findings, but conversations are meant to be more personal and provide a general overview of the students’ experiences with fellowships, research and/or creative projects at Drexel and beyond.
