Title:
Challenges and Opportunities in Pediatric Mechanical Circulatory Support

Speaker:
Joseph W. Rossano, MD, MS
Executive Director, The Cardiac Center
Medical Director, Heart Failure and Transplantation
Associate Professor of Pediatrics at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania

Details:
Heart failure in children is a prevalent clinical condition characterized by significant morbidity, mortality, and increasing resource utilization. Mechanical circulatory support of pediatric patients with heart failure has been largely restricted to the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenators for the last four decades. However, increasing technical development, and clinical experience with ventricular assist devices in adults have promoted increased development and application targeted at the infant and pediatric population with severe ventricular dysfunction. Significant limitations to this development effort have included the wide range of age and body size (i. e. one size does not fit all), and the additional complexity in many potential candidates brought on by congenital heart disease.

The presentation will review the current use and outcomes of mechanical circulatory support in children and highlight areas of urgent need.
