Rainforest researcher Dr. Mary Katherine Gonder will be the speaker at the 2016 Cheryl Beth Silverman Memorial Lecture on April 26.
The annual lecture will feature Dr. Gonder, associate professor in the Biology Department at Drexel University and Director of the Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program (BBPP). The BBPP's mission is the conservation of Bioko Island's biodiversity, especially its critically endangered primates and nesting sea turtles, through the development of economically sustainable educational programs, research programs and conservation activities that demonstrate the greater value of wildlife alive. Her field of study specializes in genomics, evolutionary processes, tropical biodiversity, conservation science, and educational capacity building.
Dr. Mary Katherine Gonder is an associate professor of biology at Drexel University. Her research is focused on examining the history of the Gulf of Guinea and Congo Basin rainforests, which are among the most important centers of biological diversity in the world. Her research group is working to improve biodiversity prediction and conservation in central Africa, a region that is undergoing rapid climatic and demographic change. Dr. Gonder has worked in central Africa for nearly twenty years, and serves as a member of the IUCN Primate Specialist Group (Section on Great Apes).
