Event Description

Please join the Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering Department for the annual Alumni Practitioner Endowed Lecture Series with guest speaker:

Constantine (Dean) Doukakis, PE ’81, ’88

Principal, Keast & Hood

Three Repair Topics in Historic Preservation Engineering:
Crumbling Stone Walls, Decaying Timber, & Corroding Steel

For structural engineers who focus on building design, it is becoming ever so common that they will find themselves repairing, renovating or adaptively reusing an historic or antiquated building. This lecture will address three areas of concern that structural engineers face working with older buildings and deteriorated conditions. These three topics are: deteriorated rubble stone walls subject to moisture intrusion; fungal decay conditions often encountered in timber roof trusses; and corroding steel and the science behind the mechanism of “rust jacking.” Examples of actual conditions and repair scenarios will be discussed.

Constantine (Dean) G. Doukakis, PE
joined Keast & Hood in 1986 and was named a principal in 1989. Dean has served as Principal-in-Charge for numerous projects including the structural design of a new $100M facility for the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, a $45M adaptive reuse of and addition to the old Reliance Insurance building for the Philadelphia Art Museum, an adaptive reuse of and underground addition to Webster Hall at Dartmouth College to serve as a rare book library, and a $40M renovation to the Academy of Music. Currently, he is the Principal-in-Charge for the $120M Museum of the American Revolution. Dean earned his BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from Drexel University in 1981 and 1988. He currently serves as an adjunct faculty member of Drexel’s Department of Construction Management and sits on the advisory board for the Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering Department. Dean’s extensive professional involvement includes past presidencies of the Delaware Valley Association of Structural Engineers and the Carpenters’ Company of the City and County of Philadelphia.

This lecture is made possible through support from Andrew J. Pennoni ’91
