Event Description
The Judaic Studies Program and the Department of English and Philosophy present “Beauty Queens, Wrestlers, and Strongmen: Popular Culture through the Eyes of the Yiddish Press,” a lecture by Dr. Edward Portnoy, Department of Jewish Studies, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
In the early twentieth century, in large urban centers, such as New York and Warsaw, Jews were eager participants in activities such as circus side shows, beauty pageants, and professional wrestling. This lecture will describe these phenomena and how the main chroniclers of Jewish life of the period, the Yiddish newspapers, presented the cultural life of Jews worldwide.
Edward Portnoy teaches Yiddish language and Jewish literature at Rutgers University. He earned a Ph.D. in Modern Jewish Studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary and an M.A. in Yiddish at Columbia University. With a focus on Jewish popular culture, he has lectured and published extensively in North America, Israel and Europe. He is also a contributing editor at the Jewish Daily Forward.
