Event Description
Speaker: Michael E. Gage, Professor of Mathematics, University of Rochester

Abstract:  WeBWorK is a computer program which allows students to check their homework answers using a web browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. The program indicates and records whether the student's answer is correct, but does not give the correct answer (in this way it is different from comparing with the answers in the back of the book). The student may attempt the problem as often as they wish without penalty. They receive credit if they obtain the correct answer before the due date.

The program does not seek to replace the instructor or textbook, but simply to encourage students to get the most from assigned homework by working diligently and completing it in a timely manner. WeBWork provides students with an incentive to continue working on problems until they've got them right, and makes it easier for professors to monitor student progress.

WeBWorK homework problems are slightly different for each student; for example the numbers in a word problem will be different. This allows students to work together and teach each other how to do the problems, but discourages them from simply telling each other the answer. Providing immediate feedback while the problem is still fresh in a student's mind and encouraging productive collaborative learning seem to be WeBWorK's most important educational advantages.

It has been used successfully for two years at the University of Rochester in calculus and pre-calculus classes.
