Abstract
We are seeing a number of new platforms incorporating multi-core CPUs, many-core GPUs, and a range of additional devices into a single System-On-Chip and discrete device solutions. These platforms are showing up in a wide range of environments spanning supercomputers to our full-function smartphones. As the range of applications continues to grow, we will need to design more flexible software abstractions and improved system architectures to fully exploit the benefits of these heterogeneous platforms. In this talk, we will look at how current programming models and hardware architectures need to change in order to provide for both ease of programming and scalable power/performance.

Bio
David Kaeli is a Professor on the ECE faculty at Northeastern University, Boston, MA, USA. He is the Director of the Northeastern University Computer Architecture Research Laboratory (NUCAR). Prior to joining Northeastern in 1993, Kaeli spent 12 years at IBM, the last 7 at T.J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY.Dr. Kaeli has published over 250 critically reviewed publications, 8 books, and 8 patents. His research spans a range of areas including microarchitecture to back-end compilers and high performance systems. His current research topics include information assurance, graphics processors, virtualization, heterogeneous computing and multi-layer reliability. He presently serves as the Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Computer Architecture (TCCA).
