Aluminum Dreams & the SS United States
Start Date: 5/24/2014Start Time: 11:00 AM
End Date: 5/24/2014End Time: 12:00 PM

Event Description
Mimi Sheller, PhD, director of the Center for Mobilities Research and Policy, will be talking about the S.S. United States at the Independence Sea Port Museum. Did you know that the 1,000 ton deckhouse of the S.S. United States was the largest single aluminum assembly in history? In all, more than 2,000 tons of aluminum went into the ocean giant, giving it the strength and lightness that allowed it to break the record for the fastest Atlantic crossing in 1952.

Sheller,  author of "Aluminum Dreams: The Making of Light Modernity" (MIT Press, 2014) will present a talk on the special role of aluminum in ship building and design, light packaging and military logistics.

The "speed metal" of modernity is having a renaissance today in new technologies on land, sea, and air, but is not without environmental impacts. Learn how our dreams of global mobility and speed, represented by iconic achievements like the S.S. United States, come with a dark side.
