TOPIC Medical Aspects of Space Flight PRESENTED BY James P. Bagian, M.D., Ph.D. (BS, Drexel University College of Engineering, 1973; Honorary Degree, 1987) Professor of Engineering Practice, Industrial & Operations Engineering, University of Michigan Dr. Bagian is Director of the Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety and a Professor in the Medical School and the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. Previously, he served as the first Director of the VA National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS) and the first Chief Patient Safety Officer for the Department of Veterans Affairs from 1999 to 2010. Dr. Bagian is a former NASA astronaut from Space Shuttles Discovery and Columbia. During his career as an astronaut, he logged 337 hours of space-flight, over two missions, STS-29 (in 1989) and STS-40 (in 1991). After leaving NASA in 1995, Dr. Bagian was elected as a member of both the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine. He served as a Drexel Trustee from 2001 to 2003, and he was inducted into the Drexel 100 in 1992.
