Dean's Seminar: When States ‘Come Out’: Europe's Sexual Minorities and the Politics of Visibility
Start Date: 5/6/2015Start Time: 3:30 PM
End Date: 5/6/2015End Time: 5:00 PM

Event Description
Learn about the exciting research being done by faculty in all departments of the College of Arts and Sciences!

Why—despite similar international pressures—has socio-legal recognition of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) minorities changed so differently across states? Why are some traditionally Catholic countries leading the way on LGBT rights and why do other advanced, wealthy democracies lag behind? Such variations are not explained by traditional explanations for successful diffusion and social change.

In this talk, Phillip Ayoub, PhD, suggests new domestic preconditions and international pathways for change. He argues that visibility is central to norm diffusion. The exchange of ideas with other countries—which activists can enable—and the extent of a state’s openness to international organizations have demonstrable effects on diffusion and social change.

The College of Arts and Sciences' Dean's Seminars are free and open to the Drexel community. Light refreshments will be served.
