Therapeutic Writing for Clinicians
Start Date: 5/19/2018Start Time: 9:30 AM
End Date: 5/19/2018End Time: 3:30 PM

Event Description
This is an experiential workshop based on the work of Kathleen Adams, LPC and Deborah Ross, LPC. This workshop introduces participants to the concept of ‘therapeutic” writing, and discusses the pitfalls of using “regular” writing for recovery. Participants will learn about the three qualities that make writing therapeutic and will also lean how writing in a certain way can literally shape new neural pathways in our brain. Participants will also learn about the “Journal Ladder” a strong clinical tool that helps assess where the client is at and helps both the client and clinician pick the right exercise for the frame of mind the client is in at the time. The same writing exercises do not work for a client who is overwhelmed and a client who is much further along in therapy. This is an easily accessible and affordable way to assist clients in their path to recovery, and can adapt to the clients lifestyle. This modality works well for clients who are battling Trauma, sudden changes in life circumstances, anxiety, depression and helps them create a safe, contained space in which to explore their feelings in a completely private and nonjudgmental manner. This incredibly versatile course celebrated 30 years last November, and has proven to be an invaluable resource for both clients and clinicians. Created by therapists, this workshop not only informs participants about various writing techniques, it also explains why they work.
