Event Description
Obfuscation: Securing Mixed-Circuits from Piracy

Abstract: A secure cyberspace is predicated on the security of the integrated circuits (ICs) included in the systems managing everything from our national defense to our global banking systems. Without such an assurance, the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of systems cannot be guaranteed. As the complexity and cost of maintaining a vertical IC design flow increases, a secure IC landscape becomes a difficult goal as a variety of untrusted third parties are relied upon. One proposed solution has been to obfuscate portions of the circuit to prevent untrusted third parties from possessing the entire design. Solutions such as split manufacturing, IC camouflaging, and encryption/locking all target the obfuscation of an integrated circuit. Since logic encryption utilizes a key-based activation approach, it is the only solution that provides increased security against both a malicious foundry and end-user. The focus of this presentation is to, therefore, describe techniques that enhance the security of both digital and analog circuits from attacks such as reverse engineering and cloning, both of which lead to IP theft.

Bio: Ioannis Savidis (S’03-M’13) received the B.S.E. degree in electrical and computer engineering and biomedical engineering from Duke University, Durham, NC,USA, in 2005, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA, in 2007 and 2013, respectively. He is currently an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, USA, where he directs the Integrated Circuits and Electronics (ICE) Design and Analysis Laboratory. His current research interests include analysis, modeling, and design methodologies for high-performance digital and mixed-signal integrated circuits, power management for system-on-chip and microprocessor circuits, IC design for trust (hardware security), interconnect-related issues in 2-D and 3-D ICs, and power and clock delivery for heterogeneous 2-D and 3-D circuits.

Dr. Savidis is an Editorial Board Member of the IEEE Transactions on Very Large Scale Integration Systems, the Microelectronics Journal, and the Journal of Circuits, Systems and Computers.
