Event Description
Miranda Lowe, of The Natural History Museum in London, will present a lecture on the exquisitely-crafted 19th century glass models of marine invertebrates.
Soft-bodied invertebrates, such as jellyfish and sea slugs, presented special challenges for natural history museums and related institutions during the 19th and early 20 centuries. Their delicate structures and beautiful colors didn't preserve well. The extraordinary creations of master German craftsmen Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka provided an ideal solution for the teaching and exhibition of these amazing creatures.
Miranda Lowe is the Collections Manager of the Marine Invertebrates Division at The Natural History Museum in London. One of her special projects is the preservation, conservation and exhibition of the museum's Blaschka glass models.
This lecture is a special addition to the Science Live programming during the Academy's Library and Archives Month. See Science Live for more information. |
