Fatigue Mitigation Technologies for Space Operations and Beyond
Start Date: 5/11/2012Start Time: 4:00 PM
End Date: 5/11/2012End Time: 5:30 PM
Event Description
Rachel Bartels, project manager at Pulsar Informatics, Inc. in Philadelphia, PA, will discuss how fatigue from inadequate sleep and circadian misalignment, common in 24-7 operational environments, contributes to increased risk of accidents caused by human error due to fatigue related performance impairments. The mitigation of fatigue related risk requires real-time, objective measurement of performance capability and the application of fatigue countermeasures. Pulsar Informatics develops state-of-the-art technology for assessing behavioral alertness in research and operational settings. Ms. Bartels' presentation will discuss Pulsar’s contribution to 1) a 520-day simulated human mission to Mars, 2) a NASA funded study to assess the cognitive performance of astronauts aboard the International Space Station, 3) a research study to determine the influence of hypnotics on astronaut performance during space operations, and 4) the development of a fatigue risk management system for long-haul trucking operations to improve safety on the road.
