Talk: “Contextualizing
Principles of Computer Science”
Professor Mongan will demonstrate some applied learning
methods for introducing Computer Science principles, focusing on putting those
principles into relatable context. These foundational principles don’t actually
require a computer at all, and they reveal that computer science is a mindset
that permeates society and solves big problems in ways that computers can be
built to exploit.
The talk will include activities he has developed, adapted,
and used from various sources to demonstrate foundational underlying principles
that enable modern computing. He will also discuss how “unplugged” activities may
be applied to other STEM disciplines.
Bill Mongan is a Teaching Professor and Associate Department
Head for Undergraduate Affairs in the College of Computing and Informatics.
Audience:
This event is open to Drexel Faculty and Staff. In addition,
students who have completed PROFESS GRAD 511: Foundations of Evidence-Based
STEM Pedagogy, are welcomed to attend.
The CASTLE Pedagogical Happy Hour is a monthly program
hosted by the Center for the Advancement of STEM Teaching and Learning
Excellence (CASTLE) and sponsored by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical
Institute (HHMI).The event offers a casual environment for faculty to share
ideas about STEM teaching and learning while enjoying refreshments. |
