Event Description Title: A Logical Space for Measurement
Speaker: Dr. Flavia Padovani, Assistant Professor of Philosophy
The "problem of measurement" is a traditional issue in the philosophy of the physical sciences. Scientific theories—relativity, gravity, the big bang— typically consist of laws, principles and equations expressed in mathematical form. But the parameters used to define these theories, such as temperature, pressure, velocity and time, only have meaning in relation to procedures of measurement. These procedures depend on conceptual frameworks which can change over time as a result of experimental and theoretical development. This talk aims to give an understanding of measurement in both a historical and theoretical perspective by combining Ludwig Wittgenstein’s concept of "logical space" with Michael Friedman’s recent account of "relativized a priori" principles of science.
This event is free and open to the Drexel community. Light refreshments will be served. |
