Event Description
This session will explore the core principles and
practices of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Mindfulness-Based
Stress Reduction is a secular set of practices that help us to address the ways
we live that increase stress and undermine our health. During this session, we
will focus on what happens when we bring mindfulness to habitual thoughts,
feelings in the body, and emotions. The goal of this session is to give you a taste
of the power of these techniques, and a sense of how to apply them in your
life. They will be helpful both at home and at work. The session will include a
brief presentation, guided meditations, and discussion.
Dr. Alexander deVaron received
training and authorization to teach mindfulness meditation in 1986. Since
then he has been an instructor in programs ranging from 30-minute introductions
to 30-day residential retreats. He has taught the 8-week Mindfulness-based
Stress Reduction class for the Penn Program for Mindfulness, and for six years
served as the senior teacher at the Shambhala Meditation Center of
Philadelphia.
Currently he teaches music at
Temple University, and also serves lead teacher for a mindfulness and stress
management group made up of employees at the university's Department of Student
Affairs. One of his primary interests is bringing mindfulness into all aspects
of life.
