Talk :"Building student networks: A guide for active learning classes"
Dr. Brewe will discuss active learning strategies are widely acknowledged to promote student conceptual understanding and retention in STEM courses. One plausible reason for this increased retention is the development of academic and social supports. In this talk I will give some background research on developing academic and social supports using Social Network Analysis. But all the academic research in the world doesn’t help build these networks. So, we then will try out one strategy for promoting interaction in classrooms of a variety of sizes: using small portable whiteboards. Participants are encouraged to bring their smart phones.
Audience:
This event is open to Drexel Faculty and Staff. In addition, students who have completed PROFESS GRAD 511: Foundations of Evidence-Based STEM Pedagogy, are welcomed to attend.
The CASTLE Pedagogical Happy Hour is a monthly program hosted by the Center for the Advancement of STEM Teaching and Learning Excellence (CASTLE) and sponsored by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).The event offers a casual environment for faculty to share ideas about STEM teaching and learning while enjoying refreshments.
