End Date: 5/31/2019End Time: 12:15 PM
Event Description

Please join the College of Arts and Sciences and Westphal College of Media Arts and Design for a special film screening featuring the imaginative work of patients from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia! In collaboration with Drexel undergraduates, these patients were able to bring their ideas to life in 3D animations and augmented reality projects. This project is an offshoot of Story Medicine, a unique community-based learning course in which patients work alongside Drexel students to develop their own original creative stories, scripts and storyboards.

This year, Story Medicine was able to expand the number of children they worked with by embarking on a cutting-edge, augmented reality project. They also worked with a young man who was recently paralyzed and shared an elaborate story by blinking answers to yes and no questions. His original story has been turned into an animated short by Westphal animation students.

The film screening is a testament to the creativity of all the patient collaborators at CHOP, and to their awe-inspiring drive to find new ways to communicate despite the most difficult of circumstances.

The Innovative Methods Behind Story Medicine
Story Medicine's innovation lies in combining a unique pedagogical experience for undergraduates with Drexel’s sophisticated technological resources, resulting in a hands-on creative journey for hospitalized children. Storytelling takes place at all levels of interaction, through the brainstorming of stories, the writing of scripts, performing of plays, drawing of characters, creation of animated shorts, and ultimately through the reflective writing of undergraduates. The result is a dynamic one-of-a-kind experience made possible by the pioneering partnership between a civically engaged university and a premier children's hospital.
