Event Description
Drexel University and Drexel University Online will host an official flag retirement ceremony that marks the culmination of Flag Day and Army Day activities. On this day in 1777, Congress created the Army of the United states, and two years later, Congress authorized the creation of the flag for the United States, consisting of “13 alternating strips of red on white with 13 white stars on a blue field forming a new constellation.” The day’s celebration begins on the morning of June 14, with a parade starting at the National Constitution Center, a flag-raising ceremony at Independence Hall, the Oath of Allegiance and Induction of men and women into the U.S. Army. The festivities then move to the Betsy Ross House for the official Flag Day ceremony, which includes a swearing in of 13 new American citizens. As a fitting end to the day, a group of flags will be retired. These flags represent a cross section of our country; some flew at schools, some over businesses, and others were displayed in private homes. The Flag Retirement Ceremony begins at 4 pm at Drexel Park, 32nd and Baring Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104. For questions or to RSVP to the Flag Retirement Ceremony, contact Mary Dignan, Drexel University Online, at mbd52@drexel.edu or 215-571-3894.
