Event Description

Title: Schrödingers Equation on Curved Surfaces

Graduate Student: Ian Korey Eaves

Abstract: In this report the Geometric Quantum Potentials effect upon the wave-function of a particle bound to the surface of a torus will be explored. In order to examine these quantum effects a finite element method (FEM) calculation was implemented in Matlab by discretizing the surface of the torus and solving the generalized eigenvalue problem for wavefunctions and associated energy levels. The method implemented here is directly generalizable to any surface. Further, a method will be demonstrated to easily apply boundary conditions to a wide variety of objects or configurations including moebius strips and beyond. Finally, FEM results will be compared with analytically soluble solutions to the geometric potential of a torus and the wave equation in toroidal coordinates.
