Event Description

The Fairmount Water Works proves the old adage that necessity breeds invention.

Following the outbreak of yellow fever in the late 18th century, Philadelphia designed its first water system to treat its unclean water.

You may know the Water Works now for its fabulous food and wonderful views of Boat House Row and the Art Museum, but there is much more to learn about this popular Philadelphia attraction.

The Alumni Association, along with the College of Engineering, the College of Engineering Alumni Association and the School of Public Health invite you to a panel discussion featuring Dr. Christopher Salesassistant professor of Civil, Architectural and Environmental EngineeringDr. Michael Yudellassociate professor of Community Health and Prevention, and an expert from the Water Works.

Following the discussion, explore the Water Works and have your questions answered by docents located throughout the exhibits. Learn about the importance of clean water and the challenges of providing it in an urban setting, all while getting an inside look at this historic Philadelphia landmark that Charles Dickens praised for its pleasant design and public usefulness!
