Founding Dean David E. Fenske of the College of Computing & Informatics invites members of the Drexel University community to a reception honoring Research Professor Gerry Stahl upon his retirement from Drexel after 12 years of distinguished service.

Since joining Drexel in 2002, Research Professor Gerry Stahl, PhD has taught human-computer interaction (HCI), computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL), computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) and social informatics (SI). He is trained in computer science, artificial intelligence, social philosophy, cognitive science and learning science, with a research approach in theory building, system development and empirical studies of software usage.

A world-class researcher in CSCL, Dr. Stahl has developed software systems and prototypes to explore support for collaborative learning, design rationale, perspectives and negotiation. In addition to organizing international conferences and writing over 150 professional papers, Dr. Stahl has authored three books based on his research developments in the Virtual Math Teams Project, most recently with Translating Euclid: Designing a human-centered mathematics(Morgan & Claypool, 2013); Studying virtual math teams (Springer, 2009); and Group cognition: Computer support for building collaborative knowledge (MIT Press, 2006).

He is the founding editor-in-chief of International Journal of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (IJCSCL), which in 2012 was ranked 6th in the nation out of 83 journals in the field of Information Science and Library Science by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), 11th out of 203 journals in the field of Education and Educational Research, and was ranked as the number one journal published by Springer Publishing Company.
