Event Description

"The Bulk Photovoltaic Effect and Ferroelectricity at the Nanoscale"

Professor Vladimir Fridkin
Institute of Crystallography
Russian Academy of Science

Abstract
The peculiarities of switching and coercive field scaling for the ferroelectric crystals (films) at the nanoscale is considered. It is shown that at the nanoscale ferroelectric properties could be properly described by mean field theory (Landau-Ginzburg). Speaking about the nanoscale we assume that the thickness of the crystal(film) in the polar direction is near to the size of critical domain nucleus (~.1-10nm for perovskites). The Bulk PhotoVoltaic Effect (BPVE) at the nanoscale shows a giant increase of efficiency.
