Event Description
BEES Graduate Research Seminar
Dr. Peter Petraitis
Department of Biology University of Pennsylvania
Are mussels and seaweeds alternative community states in the Gulf of Maine?
In 1996, Peter Petraitis and his colleagues established 48 large clearings in the rocky intertidal zone and have been following successional changes since that time. The clearings were created to test if the development of mussel beds in the middle of seaweed stands are historical accidents. The experimental work will be placed within the context of the theory of multiple stable states.
